During the winter in Hawaii, the humpback whales come down from Alaska to birth their young and to mate. Because of the shallow shelf that we have around Maui, we are lucky to get to see so many of them.
This year we decided to take the kids out on a Whale watch trip.
Our kids have never been on a boat before, so the whole experience was a treat for them.
We went out with the Pacific Whale Foundation.
We went out of Ma'alea Harbor. (one of the windiest Harbors in the world)
We went out on the 6:30 Sunrise watch.
So, we woke up at 4:30 and left our house at 5:00am to get there a bit early.
We loved it!
We watched the sun come up from behind Haleakala.
We enjoyed the ride and looked for signs of whales such as a water spray from when they breathe.
We saw several whales, but no breaching (up out of the water), which Koa was really looking forward to seeing...Maybe next year.

I have no Idea how we got this picture of part of Greg's arm missing, but we thought it was pretty funny.

Emery doesn't look very happy. The wind was "too windy."

Less wind here, now she's a little happier!
On the boat they have a hydrophone that they drop down in the water so that you can listen to the whales songs, It was really cool. The kids got to hold the microphone up to the hydrophone so that it went out over the speaker system on the boat.

These next few pictures are hard to see because I didn't have a fancy camera.
However, I did just get one from my little sister who is a photographer, so 2017 whale watch pictures should be much better.
The whale spray from the "spout" (breathing)...

The tail of a whale comes up on top of the water right before they go down for a deeper dive. So after you see it, you know you won't see that whale again for a little while. Also, the whale tail is like a thumbprint. No two whale tails are alike. Pretty cool, huh?!

And we are back into the Harbor.
What a great experience. I can't wait to do it again!
