Whale Watch 2017

So, I started really blogging again in May of 2017 and I have a bunch of things that I didn't post that happened prior to me starting up again. One of those was our 2017 whale watch.
Before I post our epic 2018 post I wanted to remember what 2017 was like.

We go every year and each year brings a different experience, a different adventure.

This year we went out of Ma'alea Harbor on the first watch of the day. If I remember right, it was at 6:00 am.
I love the early morning ones as we get to watch the sunrise up over Haleakala.

It was March, so the weather was still pretty chilly in the morning and evenings.
I love how Brin is trying to keep warm.

Right out of the harbor we came upon a momma whale and her calf...

They were both pretty calm, hanging out on top of the water.

Here comes the sun.

There is that spout that we look for.

In prior years, Emery has gotten a little impatient waiting to find the whales, so we were prepared and brought some things to do while we wait this year.

Mountain on the way to Lahaina. There is a hike up on the top of that ridge that I want go on.

Molokini in the distance.

There is a little something out there in the water. Is it a whale?

Greg spotted it and the captain drove the boat over to see what it was.

Look at Greg's whale... it was an inflatable.

Greg wanted to keep it, but the only thing that they have to get rubbish like this out of the ocean is a poking stick. They popped it. Otherwise, he could have kept it.

We did get to see a few real whales, though.

And some beautiful views.

On the Pacific Whale Foundation whale watches, they put a dopler in the water to listen for whales. Koa was down helping the crew members with it.

They also, have a crew member there to teach the kids (and adults) that want to learn about the whales. This was our 3rd or 4th whale watch, so my kids knew all the answers. Ha! Smartypants!

Back into the Harbor and on to the next activity of the day....or a nap. Ha! I'm pretty sure there were no naps.
Each year brings a different watch and this year was the year Greg found the inflatable whale.
