The weekend

We had a great Conference weekend. On Saturday morning I watched the session and put together some fun paper packets for the kids to color for Sunday. Greg had some things to do, so with the great record button that we have on the tv now we recorded Saturday sessions.
Sunday was a day. It was great to sit and listen to the prophet and the apostles speak to us, give us counsel, and warning, and to encourage us to be better. I always come away from the weekend refreshed to DO bettter and BE better.
After saying that, I have to say that three kids; five, three and two do NOT make it easy. I was going to be so good. I made Yummy cinnamon rolls (I should have taken a picture; some of my best ones yet.) I got online and printed out some picture and activity pages for the kids to color, even cut and glue. I put their little tables out in the living room with us and let them eat there, too. I warned them ahead of time that we were going to be listening to the prophet and watching speakers on tv rather than going to church.
I know "warn them" may be the wrong words, but I knew they would not like not being able to pick the channel; ie cartoons to watch instead of a bunch of people talking.

For the first session it went pretty well until about half way into it, then Makoa and B decided to play cars and chase each other around the living room making the loudest car sounds and screams possible. Normally, I would love to listen to this loud, happy, playful noise, but it became really distracting and I had to tell them to go away. I guess, at least if they know what we are doing, they don't have to stay with us the whole time right?
When it came to the second session, Afton said "I don't like Conference." I told her that made me sad and after some pout time and dirty looks, she came over and we made a gospel ABC book together. Then she went to cuddle with Greg. What's that all about? We love to cuddle together, but I guess she wasn't mad at Greg? Little turd. It was cute to see her lay on her dad's chest and watch tv, though. Makoa napped and Brin just did her thing.
Later that evening, it looked like a hurricane had come threw. Seriously!
Greg and I did a quick clean up and were in bed by 10. All in all, pretty good.
Maybe someday, it will go just as I imagine. Or Maybe I should just keep dreaming? :)

No, it probably won't ever go just as you imagine but keeping on doing what you are doing and they will remember. You are awesome!!

I do similair things with my kids. We have a special conference menu and I make each of them a little conference notebook full of crosswords, pictures to draw or color, scripture fill in the blanks...as they get older their notebooks are more about just taking notes but they know that it is a requirement to finish the books by Sunday night.

Nancy...I have a fabulous idea that has worked astoundingly well! I did it in April as well as this past weekend. It is too long to explain in a comment but I will be posting it to my blog next week some time. My blog is private now, how can I get your e-mail so that I can e-mail you an invite?

Good for you for making cinnamon rolls. Little Susie Homemaker!!
We do conference bingo and that works great with my kids, except Jonah. We use M&M's as the markers and you get to eat the row of candy after you get a bingo.

You will be blessed for doing the right thing. You can't really expect a bunch of pre-schoolers to sit still through conference. Don't get your hopes up, that way they won't be let down. They'll sit still someday. It is just important for them to know it is important to you. Miss you.
