Sakamoto Invitational 2017

The Sakamoto Invitational is a Swim Meet that is held every year for all those swimmers that have Hawaii A, AA, AAA on up times.

It is a two day meet in honor of Coach Sochi Sakamoto who had a dream to take no named kids that started swimming in the Sugar cane ditches to the Olympics in Japan of 1940.
Sakamoto, as well, as his swimmers Did make a name for themselves. They started from very humble beginnings and achieved greatness. However, they were unable to make it to the Olympics, as they were cancelled because of the War.

When we first started these meets, I wondered because at the opening ceremony a Hawaiian dancer dances on a platform as it floats across the pool, then the senior swimmers pass a torch through the water to the other end of the pool finally lighting a caldron. The caldron stays lit for the two day meet. Now that I know the story behind the meet, I love it even more!

A Pineapple relay was added to the meet as well, where teams put together a relay of eight swimmers and race.

It is my favorite meet of the year!

When you are hanging in the gutter at the end of the race, you know you gave it your all. And Makoa did!

The grid on Afton's hand is how they know where to swim when.

Nice backstroke finish! "What's my time??"
